Leontel

“So let me get this right,” the vampiress muttered, blue eyes flashing murderously. “While I was over in Baton Rouge trying to outsmart that know-it all Arla Alcaraz, you were fooling around with a human?”

Leontel barely had time to miss the woman he’d just parted with so abruptly, because the name struck him with chilling familiarity.

“Wait. Who?”

“Do you have any idea how hard it was to detract the guy from the Clan of Nox from that witch’s offers?” Solange continued to complain, undeterred. “She was ready to play every card in the game. Including allowing vampires to open their own nightclub on Bourbon, which they’ve been asking O.M.A for years!”

Leontel tuned out the rest of her rant as he fished into his pocket to retrieve his wallet. With fumbling fingers he pulled out a business card that had been given to him that fateful evening one week ago. Zona Alcaraz. Funeral Director at Alcaraz Family Funeral Home.

“I was lucky to be able to slip the shard into my pocket while Alcaraz and Gontram were signing the deal.” There was an icy pause. “Hey, are you even listening to me?”

Leontel didn’t answer. He was too busy being hit by the weight of what he had just discovered. What does this mean?, was the question that danced around his stunned mind as he continued to stare at the card.

“Give me that,” the shrill voice snapped. He didn’t resist when the bit of cardboard was snatched from his fingers. Solange snorted. “So you were being led around by one of the Alcaraz sisters?”

Her words cut deep into his heart – and a bit more figuratively than Leontel was used to. An odd, dull pain spread through his chest. Kind of like something vital had been torn out. Which was absurd, because vampires only functioned on blood and dark energy.

“What a fool you are. You really can’t be counted on, can you? No more than two hundred years ago, when you promised to bring me the Mori mirror.”

“You can’t hold that against me,” Leontel murmured absently. “I spent nearly a decade in Europe trying to find that mirror for you. And I succeeded.”

“Until it was swiped from right under your nose by a mere pirate,” Solange hissed. “Leontel the almighty vampire, hoodwinked by a mortal. All you could do after that was file a complaint with O.M.A for theft. Boohoo!”

The bitterness in the vampiress’ words caught his attention somewhat. “It worked. St. Patin returned the mirror, didn’t he?”

“Two centuries later!” Solange snarled. “And only partially. What good is the frame without this?”

She waved an oddly shaped bundle in front of his eyes. Without a doubt the shard she had stolen from the Clan of Nox.

“St. Patin stole the mirror in the light of day, Solange,” he reminded her quietly, recalling the chaos of the battle onboard as pirates ransacked the ship Leontel had been on to return from his decade long search for the Immortalem Mori. “I was a young vampire at the time. I couldn’t have possibly –”

“Excuses!” the blonde interrupted mercilessly.
